Analysis Group Mourns the Loss of Longtime Academic Affiliate Sharon Oster
June 27, 2022
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Professor Sharon M. Oster, who died on June 10, 2022, at age 73, after a long battle with cancer. Professor Oster was a pioneering female economist and a longtime affiliate of Analysis Group, with many friends in the firm.
A world-renowned expert on competition, industrial organization, microeconomics, and strategy, Professor Oster spent the bulk of her career at Yale University, where she broke many barriers and left a lasting legacy. She was the first woman to be tenured at the Yale School of Management and the school’s first female dean, serving from 2008 to 2011. She retired from teaching in 2018 and was the Frederic D. Wolfe Professor Emerita of Management and Entrepreneurship until her death. Among her many awards was the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award, given by the American Economic Association to those who have furthered the status of women in the economics profession. Professor Oster was also a deeply experienced expert witness, testifying in numerous antitrust and intellectual property cases.
“Sharon was not only a brilliant and pathbreaking economist but a wonderful friend to me and to Analysis Group,” said Martha S. Samuelson, the firm’s chairman and CEO. “I first met her two months after I started at Analysis Group, and we remained close throughout our lives. Sharon was kind, brilliant, and fun, and I’m glad so many people at the firm had the great experience of meeting and working with her. We will all miss her greatly.”
